PLANNING YOUR DECK

LUMBER AND DECKING
|
|
From 1 x 1 to 6 x 6 or 2 x 12 Perkins has all of the necessary lumber, hardware and fasteners to assemble you deck sub-structure and surface. Please refer to the Products and Services tab to view a list of available cedar or pressure-treated lumber.

- The dimension of the beams and joists material is often a function of the size of the deck as well as the number of post being used. At Perkins we carry most sizes and in lengths up to twenty feet! There are many ways to build a deck of a particular size or configuration. Talk to us first we may be able to offer tips on easier or less expensive ways to build a deck. Also when we help lay one out we consider the ultimate requirements or desires for handrails or stairs. Often a support post can double as a main post for the stairs or railing.
- The three most common dimensions for decking are 2 x 4, 2 x 6, or 5/4 x 6. 2 x 4 is the least common of the three, with most people using one of the other two. The 5/4 x 6 (or decking) is generally a nicer profile than the 2 x 6 and is often a better quality (although all of our wood is great quality). Remember to keep your joist 16 inches on center or less if you use it though as it is only really one inch thick.
- Your deck should be framed a few inches smaller than the finished size, i.e. if you are building a 16 foot by 20 foot deck you should frame it 15'8" x 19' 8". This allows you to trim the end of the deck boards after you are finished.
